On April 3rd, 2003, the minister of Culture officially declared the protection of the first floating monument, the former hydrographic vessel Paster Pype. Obviously it is one of the remaining Belgian built ships still afloat. The ship is powered by a rather unique diesel-electric motor. After the Pastor Pype ended her career as a hydrograpic survey vessel for the Belgian government, she was used by various organisations such as Sea Cadets. But lack of proper maintenance and funds made her look like a hardly floating wreck in recent years. The preservation of the ship didn't come too early then. Let us hope now that the intentions are sincere, and not shall end in a scrapyard.
After years of hope and waiting, the restoration project failed, now money was found and the restoration plan was called off.
