The class is based on the United States Navy's Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates, but modified for Australian requirements.

She was decommissioned on 9 December 2017 and was supposed to be scuttled as a dive wreck in Tasmania, but the deal was pulled by the Tasmanian Government.
In response, a new campaign has emerged attempting to preserve her as a museum ship.
