On 05-12-2012 around 18:30h in the North Sea, just above the Dutch coast, she had a collision with the feeder Corvus J. The Baltic Ace had just left Zeebrugge a couple of hours ago and was underway to Kotka (Finland), while the Corvus J was underway from Grangemouth (Scotland) to Antwerp.
Baltic Ace began taking on water, capsized and sank within 15 minutes in shallow waters. According to the ship's manager, Corvus J likely hit Baltic Ace on the side, where void tanks forming a double side are only 1.3 metres wide, quickly flooding the cargo decks.
The accident costed the life of five members of the 24-person crew and six are still missing and were also declared dead.
In June 2015 the first part of the sunken vessel arrived in Vlaardingen (NL) for further scrap, On 24/11/15 the last remains were lifted and disposed. |
